Ghanaian artist Wendy Shay has revealed the severe impact online trolling had on her music career, describing herself as the most bullied artist in the country. Speaking on the Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope Shopsydoo, she recounted the intense backlash she faced from critics who accused her of imitating the late Ebony Reigns. The relentless cyberbullying became so overwhelming that her family urged her to quit music and return to Germany.
“At a point, my mom asked me to quit music and return to Germany because the trolling was overwhelming and it affected everyone in my family,” Wendy shared. “Some of my relatives were even kind of shy to associate with me at the time.” She acknowledged their reaction, admitting the ridicule was extreme. “Imagine they take your face, edit it to make you look like an old woman, and start mocking and laughing at you. They even said I wasn’t talented enough. It was crazy. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy, but it built me,” she added.
Despite the negativity, Wendy Shay persevered, crediting her supporters for keeping her motivated. Her resilience has paid off, earning her multiple accolades, including awards at the 3Music Awards and the Ghana Music Awards. Her latest single, It’s Too Late, has gained significant traction, topping charts and receiving widespread airplay globally.
