Sherifa Gunu Criticizes TikTok’s Influence on Musicians

Ghanaian musician Sherifa Gunu has expressed her concerns about the growing pressure on artists, particularly women, to compromise their integrity for social media fame. In a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz, she highlighted the double-edged nature of platforms like TikTok, which she described as both a blessing and a curse for the music industry.

According to Sherifa, talent alone is no longer enough to capture public attention. She lamented the trend where female musicians feel compelled to appear half-naked in videos to gain visibility. “You could be the most talented artiste, but if you’re not half-naked on TikTok, people won’t pay attention. Sadly, talent isn’t enough anymore,” she stated. Despite these challenges, Sherifa remains committed to using her platform to promote authentic music, reminding her followers that artistry should not be overshadowed by sensationalism.

Beyond the issue of social media pressures, Sherifa also addressed the broader neglect of veteran musicians in Ghana. She criticized the lack of recognition for older artistes who have significantly contributed to the country’s creative industry. Unlike other nations that celebrate their cultural icons, she noted that Ghana often waits too long to honor its legends—usually posthumously or only after they gain international acclaim.

Sherifa emphasized the urgent need for Ghana to appreciate its veteran musicians while they are still alive and active in their craft. She called for a cultural shift in how the industry and the public value artistic contributions, urging greater respect and acknowledgment for those who have shaped the nation’s musical heritage. Her remarks serve as a wake-up call for stakeholders to reassess the standards and values within the entertainment sector.
