Mavis Asante: Secular-Gospel Collaborations Are Just Noise.

Mavis Asante, a Ghanaian gospel artist, has strongly criticized collaborations between gospel and secular musicians, describing them as mere “noise” that dilutes the spiritual message of gospel music.

In an exclusive interview with Graphic Showbiz, she questioned the motives behind such partnerships, asking whether they were driven by fame, hype, or genuine evangelism.

Asante, who recently released her comeback single, Victory, argued that gospel and secular musicians serve entirely different purposes. She likened the distinction to a lawyer attempting surgery or a surgeon defending a client in court—roles that are fundamentally incompatible. “We are two different people doing two different things,” she emphasized.

Despite the popularity of past gospel-secular collaborations in Ghana—such as Bebree by Herty Borngreat featuring Sarkodie and The Lord’s Prayer by Joyce Blessing featuring AB Crentsil—Asante maintains that such partnerships create confusion. She believes secular artists, whose work often centers on worldly themes, cannot align with the gospel’s mission of salvation and spiritual edification.

Instead of seeking secular features, Asante urged gospel musicians to collaborate within their own fraternity to expand their reach. She stressed the importance of discernment, prayer, and fasting before entering any musical partnership. “Sometimes, saying no to certain desires honors God more than any big-name collaboration could ever do,” she concluded.

Her stance highlights an ongoing debate in Ghana’s music industry, where the blending of gospel and secular influences continues to spark discussions about artistic integrity and spiritual responsibility.
